Courses We Offer

Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC).  The completion of the CFSC and /or the related exam is required for individuals that wish to possess or purchase a firearm for any purpose in Canada. (this includes air rifles with a muzzle velocity exceeding 500 feet per second) The course provides instruction on the safe handing, transportation, display and storage of non-restricted firearms (rifles and shot guns). During the instruction the student will learn how to load, unload and safely handle 5 different deactivated firearms action types of rifles and shot guns from a variety of manufacturers. The student will also be provided with descriptions of ammunition types and function through illustrations and various real examples that have also been deactivated. Instruction is conducted by both lecture and hands on methods. The CFSC is also a pre-requisite for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC). The completion of the CRFSC and /or the related exam is required for individuals that wish to possess or purchase a restricted firearm for any purpose in Canada. (this includes air pistols with a muzzle velocity exceeding 500 feet per second) This course provides instruction on the safe handing, transportation, display and storage of restricted firearms (handguns guns). During the instruction the student will learn how to load, unload and safely handle 3 different deactivated firearms action types of handguns from a variety of manufacturers. The student will also be provided with descriptions of ammunition types and function through illustrations and various real examples that have also been deactivated. Instruction is conducted by both lecture and hands on methods.

Ontario Hunter Education Program. To obtain a licence to hunt small game in Ontario, the student must take the Ontario Hunter Education Course and pass the related exam. This requirement has resulted in the substantial decline of hunting incidents causing both injury and death since its inception in 1960. The focus of the course is to promote safe and ethical hunting, and to give the student a basic understanding of the principles of game management, ecology and ecosystems and how hunters in Ontario contribute to conservation. The course also contains instruction on the authority of Conservation Officers, archery equipment, survival techniques, prevention and treatment of hypothermia and selecting the appropriate hunting gear. Most importantly, the student will be able to find information in the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary so he/she can comply with various regulations contained within the summary, and obtain the information on licence requirements for the species they wish to hunt.

Individuals moving to Ontario who possess a hunting licence from another Canadian province can challenge the Ontario Hunters exam. If the student fails this exam on the 1st attempt, he/she is required to take the course.

What does the course allow me to do? Completing the mandatory Ontario Hunter EDUCATION program course allows the student to apply for a small game licence for the province of Ontario.

Who can take the course? Anyone over the age of 12 can take the CFSC and the Ontario HEP and then apply to become a Hunter Apprentice.

Students that are 15 years of age or older can apply for an Ontario Hunting licence. Only students 18 years of age or older can apply for a PAL to acquire restricted or non-restricted firearms.

At The Gun Centre, we feel strongly about promoting firearms safety in the home so students with families are invited to bring their spouse to the class at no charge if they do not wish to apply for a PAL.
